a little bit about us

About our company

About
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Granville Waiters. He was a long-time supporter of the organization – going back more than a decade, to 2010. Shortly after, he joined the board of directors and in October 2013 he became board Chair. We are grateful for his service to the community and for helping the agency move forward in achieving our goals. The chair at the head of the table will have a hole, but Granville would want us to rebound. We will continue to fulfill our mission in serving the community and always remember Granville Waiters as we do so.

Our mission is to “reach out and touch” the lives of individuals and families, empowering them to achieve self-sufficiency, positive relationships, and economic success.

Founded in 1984, Metropolitan Community Services (MCS) has been serving vulnerable populations in our communities, including formerly incarcerated individuals, for nearly 35 years. In 2008, Teaching Opportunity Unity by Connecting Hearts (T.O.U.C.H.), was founded with a focus on building a peer-to-peer mentoring culture and workforce development programming. MCS and T.O.U.C.H. combined forces, to form what is commonly known as MCS-T.O.U.C.H. Now the agency serves incarcerated men and women who are soon-to-be-released, formerly incarcerated men and women, and other at-risk populations 18 years of age and older.

"After 26 years of incarceration and coming to a virtually unknown town, stepping out on faith is what a Christian man would be inclined to do, but having no room for error makes it difficult. Touch offered me the opportunity I needed, not only did it have re entry programs in place to nurture my development but it afforded me the time I needed to leave the proverbial "nest." A lot of programs offer assistance, but what I needed coming back into society was somebody to believe in me, and to exploit (for my benefit) the potential in me. Touch gave me a hand up it counseled, it advocated, but most of all, it embraced who I was."

“I found out about TOUCH through word of mouth. Some inmates were talking about how amazing the program was and I just had to come here and check it out and see what, you know, they could offer me. A group of us individuals who have very different backgrounds but have the same common denominator, get together in a room, we talk about our issues, and our barriers, our thinking errors. We are focusing on not making the same mistakes and it’s just so comfortable to be able to speak to other people who have similar downfalls. It builds confidence because you know you are not alone.”
